Xavier Mazzarol is a French multidisciplinary artist currently based in Paris and living between Paris and Berlin. His work explores the intersections of figuration, abstraction, and materiality through painting, with a particular focus on reinterpreting Still Life through a contemporary and introspective lens. He studied at Chelsea College of Arts in London (2002) and holds an MFA from Villa Arson in Nice, France (2004).
Mazzarol is currently an artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (Marais site), following a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in Montmartre (2-12 program, 2023–2024). He has also completed residencies at Confort Moderne in Poitiers, France (2018), Lucile Avenue Residency in Los Angeles, USA (2016), and L’Âge d’Or in Berlin, Germany (2004).
His recent solo exhibitions challenge the boundaries of Still Life and its tension with portraiture. In Asperges at SORRY WE’RE CLOSED gallery in Brussels (2024), he presented 12 oil paintings inspired by Édouard Manet’s La botte d’asperges (1880). His 2022 exhibition Rose à la fenêtre at Open Berlin Project Space explored the recurring motif of roses as a reification of a relationship, addressing themes of intimacy, care, and ritual.
